Volleyball Outlasts Tulsa 3-2 at SHSU Tourney

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Baylor junior outside hitter Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) led four players with double-digit kills by hitting .485 with 20 kills and the Bears used another solid blocking performance to hand Tulsa its first loss of the season, 3-2 (30-20, 19-30, 30-20, 24-30, 15-12), in match two of the Sam Houston State Tournament Friday at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Junior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) ran a balanced offense, dishing out 53 assists, recording 10 digs for her second double-double of the season and serving up four aces. Junior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) hit .542 with 15 kills, while sophomore right-side hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) had 12 kills and sophomore middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) added 11. LeBlanc recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 digs and added a career-high six assists. Baylor (3-3) hit .357 for the match, their highest percentage of the year, while holding Tulsa to .272.
Guilliard-Young led the Bears (3-3) with nine blocks (3 solo), while Huston had six and junior middle blocker Adeline Meira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had five as Baylor posted 14 team blocks. Junior libero Maggie Chlebana (Calgary, Alberta) had a career-high and match-high 16 digs.
Joyce Silva led Tulsa (5-1) with 20 kills but hit only .196. Lindsay Eaves added 14 kills for the Golden Hurricane, while Kassiana Urnau posted 14 digs and four aces.
The Bears cruised through game one led by Spriggs, who recorded a perfect six kills on six attempts, and Odion, who had five kills. Guilliard-Young also came up big with two solo blocks in the frame, and Baylor hit .484. Tulsa bounced back in game two by hitting .484 behind six kills from Silva to even the match.
Baylor got hot again in game three by hitting a whopping .536 with six kills from Odion and four from Guilliard-Young. Tulsa put up another fight in game four with five kills from Amy Meyer, and its four aces proved to be the difference.
The Bears fell behind 5-2 early in game five, but clawed back to tie the game at eight. The teams traded points until a dump kill by Huston put the Bears ahead for good at 12-11 and a block by Guilliard-Young and a kill by Spriggs put the match away.
Baylor returns to action when it faces Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, a winner in five over Centenary in match one, at 4:30 p.m. today.
