WACO, Texas - Head coach Matt Knoll tweaked his lineup for the team's match against Oklahoma and the Bears showed the squad's depth by posting a 6-1 win over the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, Okla., on Saturday at OU's Headington Family Tennis Center.
With the win, the Bears remained perfect in league play with one more Big 12 match remaining (Oklahoma State). The second-ranked Bears moved to 21-2 and 6-0 in the Big 12 while the Sooners fell to 15-5 and 1-3 in league action.
The doubles point wasn't settled until the final match ended. Oklahoma's Lee Gregg and Marek Velicka claimed a win at No. 3, 8-3, over Reiner Neurhor and Jon Reckewey. BU's Benedikt Dorsch and Matija Zgaga, ranked No. 20, got the Bears on the board with an 8-3 triumph at No. 1. Matias Marin and Jason Gould, making their first appearance at the No. 2 spot, secured the doubles point for Baylor with an 8-4 victory. With regulars Benjamin Becker and Ivor Lovrak taking a rest, Jon Reckewey and Adrian Szatmary played at No. 5 and 6, respectively and Marin, Zgaga and Neurohr each moved up a spot in the lineup. Dorsch, Zgaga, Neurohr, Reckewey and Szatmary all posted two set wins. Oklahoma's lone victory came at No. 2 when Ondrej Fukala defeated 90th-ranked Marin, 6-2, 6-4.
The Bears can secure their third straight Big 12 championship and fourth in the last five seasons if they defeat the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Sunday in Stillwater. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. The Bears return home for their final regular season match of the year when they host SMU on Thursday, April 15 at 6 p.m.
