Baylor University head football coach Guy Morriss announced today that veteran defensive coordinator and linebackers coach John Goodner has resigned his position with the Bears. A search for Goodner's replacement will begin immediately according to Morriss.

"We've lost a very valuable staff member who was a great coach and an even better person," Morriss said. "John was an outstanding teacher of the game and we are sorry to see him go. We wish him and his family well."

The 2003 campaign marked Goodner's 21st as a Division I-A assistant coach, the last eight of which were spent as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Baylor (2003), Kentucky (2001-02) and Texas Tech (1995-99). He originally went to Texas Tech as inside linebackers coach in 1993 and served in that position until being promoted two years later.

Goodner broke into the college coaching ranks when legendary Baylor coach Grant Teaff hired him as the Bears' linebackers coach in 1982, a position he held until Teaff retired following the 1992 season. In Teaff's final season, Goodner also served as BU's defensive coordinator.

A native of Frederick, Okla., Goodner played his college football at Southwestern Oklahoma State. He spent 14 years as a high school coach, including head coaching stops at Noble (Okla.) H.S., Denison (Texas) H.S. and Waxahachie (Texas) H.S. before joining the Baylor staff.
