Matt Lott, an All-America offensive tackle at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Miss., has signed a National Letter of Intent to play football for Baylor, Bears' coach Guy Morriss announced Wednesday. The 6-5, 300-pound Lott, a native of Wiggins, Miss., will enroll at Baylor in January and have two seasons of eligibility remaining beginning next fall.
"We are excited to sign a player of Matt's caliber and believe he will be able to step in and give us immediate help on the offensive line," said Morriss, a former All-Pro lineman with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots. "He's got all of the skills that you like to see in an offensive lineman and he's a very good student. We are glad to have him joining our program."
Lott, a starter on coach Tim Hatten's 2004 Wildcat team which captured both the MACJC and National Junior College Athletic Association national titles en route to a 12-0 record, earned first-team NJCAA All-America honors at offensive tackle. He allowed just one sack for a Pearl River offense which led the nation in passing (301.4 ypg) and ranked sixth in total offense (439.0 ypg).
An outstanding student, Lott was recently named to the 2004 JC Gridwire Scholar-Athlete Junior College All-America team and plans to major in civil engineering at Baylor. He attended Stone County [Miss.] High School where he earned honorable mention All-District 7-4A honors for coach Greg Amacker as a senior.
The mid-year junior college transfer signing period runs from Dec. 15, 2004 through Jan. 15, 2005. The national signing day for high school football players is Feb. 2, 2005.
