WACO, Texas - Baylor sophomore Daniel Sepulveda added to his rapidly growing list of accolades Thursday, earning second-team All-America honors from the Walter Camp Football Foundation. This is the 115th year the foundation has honored an All-America college football team.
Sepulveda, who also was named the 2004 Ray Guy Award recipient Thursday, is Baylor's first All-American since defensive back Adrian Robinson in 1995. Since 1921, 43 Baylor football student-athletes have earned All-America honors a total of 49 times.
A sophomore, from Dallas, Texas, Sepulveda has a legitimate chance to join James Ray Smith (1953-1954), Ronnie Bull (1960-1961), Lawrence Elkins (1963-1964), Mike Singletary (1978-1979-1980) and Thomas Everett (1985-1986) as Baylor's only two-time All-Americans.
The Walter Camp All-America teams are selected by head coaches and sports information directors of the 117 Division I-A football schools. Walter Camp, considered "The Father of American Football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. The Walter Camp Football Foundation is a New Haven, Conn., based volunteer group that was founded in 1967.
The first punter or kicker in Baylor history to earn All-America honors, Sepulveda leads the nation with 41.9 percent of his punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned (62.9 percent). He also is second nationally in net average (42.5 yards per punt) and in average return yardage (3.5 yards per punt).
Sepulveda ranks second in the Big 12 and third nationally with 46.0 yards per punt, the second-best single-season average in school history. Sepulveda also leads the conference with 24 punts of 50-plus yards (tied for second nationally) and 26 punts downed inside the opponent's 20 yard line (tied for first nationally). Baylor ranks fourth nationally in net punting at 40.6 yards per punt.
In just two seasons, Sepulveda already has rewritten Baylor's punting records. His career average of 44.3 yards per punt ranks first all-time at Baylor. He also has established a school record with 50 career punts of 50-plus yards. Sepulveda has eight career punts of 60-plus yards, third in school history and two shy of the Baylor record. Sepulveda has recorded at least one punt of 50-plus yards in 22 of 23 career games and at least one punt inside the opponent's 20-yard line in 19 of 23 games.
Members of the 2004 Walter Camp All-America teams will be honored at the organization's annual awards banquet Feb. 12, 2005, at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
