Baylor Lands Nine On Academic All-Big 12 Team

Nine Baylor football players have been selected to the Big 12 Conference's 2004 Academic All-Conference honor squad released Tuesday afternoon by the league office. The Bears placed three student-athletes on the first team and had six second-team honorees.
Baylor's first-team honorees included sophomore punter Daniel Sepulveda, who earlier Tuesday was selected as a finalist for the 2004 Ray Guy Award, senior wide receiver John Martin and redshirt freshman tight end Mike Miller. Martin earned his third first-team Academic All-Big 12 award, while Sepulveda received his second straight first-team citation and Miller was honored for the first time.
The Bears' second-team selections were junior linebacker Colin Allred, sophomore quarterback Shawn Bell, senior center Joseph DeWoody, junior wide receiver Ryan Jeffrey, senior defensive back David Schieck and senior linebacker Michael Tolbert.
All-told, 142 student-athletes were named to the 2004 Academic All-Big 12 honor team. Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the football academic all-league squad consisted of 84 first-team members combined with 58 on the second team.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests.
