PENELOPE, Texas - Baylor football team members Daniel Sepulveda, Shawn Bell and Quincy Jenkins visited Penelope I.S.D. Monday. Penelope is located 20 miles east of Elm Mott.
The players spoke to an assembly of children in K-8th grade to kick off the school's Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week stresses the importance of living life free from drugs and alcohol. The students were very excited about the football players visiting their school.
Fifth-grade teacher April McAdams said, "We rarely get opportunities like this at our school since we are a small school so far out in the country."
Sepulveda, who is an All-American candidate and Ray Guy Award candidate, spoke to the kids about working hard and resisting drugs and alcohol. He told the kids to persevere through difficult times.
Sepulveda said, "It's not always easy to resist drugs and alcohol, but you have to deal with it when you get older."
Quincy Jenkins, a sophomore from Trinidad, Texas, said his dad told him to always put school before sports and to respect his teachers. Quincy also attended a small school, so he was able to relate to the Penelope students.
"Set your goals high," Quincy said, "and don't let alcohol or drugs and other people keep you from accomplishing them."
Towards the end of the assembly, Shawn Bell picked one student from each grade to throw a pass to Daniel. Bell told the kids not to let their attitude keep them from accomplishing their goals.
"You can't control how tall or fast you are, but you can control your attitude," Bell said. "Don't let anyone stop you from what you want to do. I'm 6'0 and no one thought I could play college football. I didn't let anyone stop me and I kept my mind focused on what I wanted to do."
The players passed out Baylor stickers and gave the kids high-fives as the students left the assembly. For more information about community visits, please call Liesl Rodenhaver at 710-3073.
