Vanderbilt Ends Men's Tennis Season

WACO, Texas - The seventh-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores upset the third-ranked Baylor Bears 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2003 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., on Sunday.

The loss halted Baylor's school record 19-match winning streak and the Bears saw their season end with a 28-2 record.

Vanderbilt started off fast, winning doubles matches at Nos. 2 and 3 by identical 8-3 scores. The Commodores were also leading at No. 1, 7-6, when play was suspended.

Singles matches were moved indoors with the first four postitions taking to the courts. Baylor's Zoltan Papp was Vanderbilt's first conquest, the senior righthander, playing with a broken right hand, lost to Matt Lockin 6-1, 6-2. The Bears' Benedikt Dorsch, playing at No. 2 and Matias Marin, playing at No. 4, lost their first sets but rebounded to take the second. Dorsch, ranked No. 2 nationally, lost the third set 6-2 to No. 16 Chad Harris. Marin, a junior, also took the second set to even his match but lost the third 7-5 to Vandy's Scott Brown to enable the Commodores to gain the match-winning fourth point. Benjamin Becker was leading in the third set against the nation's top-ranked player Bobby Reynolds when play was halted. Baylor's Reiner Neurohr and his opponent, Zach Dailey, had just started their match and were tied at 2-2 when play was halted. Freshman Ivor Lovrak and Vanderbilt's Lewis Smith never made it to the court.

A school record four Baylor players have been selected for the 2003 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships which begins on Wed., May 21 and runs through the 26th. Sophomores Benedikt Dorsch, the tournament's No. 2 seed, and Benjamin Becker, senior Zoltan Papp and junior Matias Marin all were selected for singles and Dorsch and junior Reiner Neurohr enter the 32-draw doubles tournament. Becker and Papp are alternates for the doubles.
