Baylor's men's tennis team raised its record to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 action by posting a 5-2 victory over the Nebraska Huskers at the Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln on Friday.
Baylor, currently ranked No. 4 nationally, swept through doubles then gained four singles wins to register the victory.
Benjamin Becker and Zoltan Papp, playing at No. 1, raised their season record to 12-4 with an 8-5 win over NU's Joerg Barthel and Jose Rivera. Playing in the No. 2 spot, Matias Marin and Ivor Lovrak defeated D.J. Geatz and Joel Reckewey, 8-5. The victory raised the duo's record to 9-2. Reiner Neurohr teamed with Mike Garcia to defeat Florian Preissler and Cesar Vargas 8-4
Baylor swept the top four singles matches as well. In the top singles position Benedikt Dorsch, ranked No. 1 nationally, extended his season record to 32-2 by defeating Nebraska's Preissler, ranked No. 78, 6-4, 6-0. No. 67 Becker, playing at No. 2, kept his winning streak alive with his ninth straight win by defeating Barthel 6-1, 6-1 and No. 51 Papp raced by Geatz 6-3, 6-0. BU's Marin, ranked No. 30 nationally, got past the Huskers' Rivera 6-1, 6-3. Baylor's Barry McLaren had his five-match winning streak snapped when he lost at No. 5 to 6-4, 6-4. Mike Garcia, seeing just his second match in dual match competition, lost at No. 6 to Patrick Kennedy 6-4, 7-5.
The Bears now travel to Lexington, Ky., where they will take on the No. 9 Kentucky Wildcats on Sun., March 9 at 2 p.m. (CST). The Wildcats top player is Jesse Witten, currently ranked No. 10. Last season the Bears upset then-No. 4 Kentucky in Waco 4-3. Baylor swept the doubles matches then won three singles matches to claim the win.
