WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's cross country placed 25th at the 2003 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Waterloo, Iowa on Monday, Nov. 24. The University of Northern Iowa hosted the meet at the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course.
The women's title was taken home by Stanford, but in a tight battle with Brigham Young. The Cardinal scored 120 points to 128 for the 2002 national-champion Cougars. Providence was third with 222, followed by Michigan with 232 and Colorado with 269. Baylor tallied 516 points in the race.
"I'm really proud of the girls and the season we've had," said head coach Todd Harbour. "This season has been a great building block for our very young team. We came into the season unranked and made it to the NCAA Championships as a team. Erin Dixon stepped up really big for us today."
Dixon, a senior from Kingwood, Texas, saved her best race for last. In her last cross country competition for the Bears she led the team with a time of 21:15.5 over the 6,000 meter course to finish in 99th place. Dixon cut 52 seconds off the time she ran at the NCAA Pre-Nationals over the same course in mid- October. Sophomore Lisa Cornelius was Baylor's second finisher in 104th with a time of 21:17.8. Sophomore Angela Marvin clocked a 21:22.8 to place 125th and freshman Monique Ortega placed 151st with a personal best of 21:22.6. Another freshman, Brittany Brockman placed 181st with a time of 21:15.7. Junior Jessa Chance was 214th, clocking in at 22:14.2 and Megan McCoin, a senior, was timed in 22:57.6 which placed her 244th.
