Final Stats

WACO, Texas - The Baylor soccer team watched its post-season hopes wash away against Iowa State in a 1-1 decision Sunday at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field on the Baylor campus.

For the second year in a row, the Bears (6-9-2, 1-6-2 Big 12) and Cyclones (5-8-4, 2-5-2 Big 12) went to overtime as the Bears drew their second tie of the season. Last season, the Bears suffered a 4-3 loss in Ames, Iowa, in overtime. The Bears lead the all-time series 6-2-1.

After a scoreless first half, junior forward Kristin Ruef beat Iowa State goalkeeper Beth Chapman, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute of the game. Ruef received a long pass through the middle from senior midfielder Ryan Lee, then dribbled the ball around Chapman, burying the shot in an open net. It was Ruef's second goal of the season, both coming in the last three games since moving to the forward position against Oklahoma. Ruef recorded a team-high seven shots on the day, giving her 13 shots in the last three games.

The Bears were able to hold off a strong Cyclone charge until the 88th minute when forward Amy Flores knocked in a shot over Baylor goalkeeper Monica Housden. Flores received a pass from Kristina Baumann and fired in the equalizer from 15 yards out, knotting the score at one goal apiece. It was Flores' fourth goal on the season and fourth assist for Baumann.

Despite each team only scoring one goal, both goalkeepers had a busy afternoon. For the Bears, Housden recorded nine saves in the games, improving her season total to 81. On the opposite end of the pitch, Chapman recorded six saves on the day, being challenged twice in the first overtime period.

The tie guarantees that the Bears can finish no higher than ninth place in the Big 12, which will keep Baylor out of the Big 12 Tournament for the second year in a row.

The Bears will wrap up conference play on Friday as they host the Texas Tech Red Raiders at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field at 7 p.m. Baylor will then host Rice at 7 p.m. Sunday in the team's final match of the 2003 season.
