WACO, Texas - Baylor men's tennis team advanced three players to the quarterfinals of the H.E.B. Baylor Intercollegiates Tournament today. The fall tournament, which features players from 19 different teams, is being played at the Baylor Tennis Center at the Turner Riverfront Complex. The tournament concludes on Monday, Sept. 30 with championships matches at noon.
In men's "A" singles, Benjamin Becker, Zoltan Papp and Benedikt Dorsch all won round of 16 matches to move into the quarterfinals. Quarterfinal action will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. Becker, a sophomore and the tournament's top seed, rolled past Texas' Peter Stroer 6-3, 6-3 and willl face New Mexico's Divan Coetzee, seeded No. 8. Papp, a senior, was dominant in his match against Michael Innerebner of Texas Tech, posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Papp will match up against Lester Cook of Texas A&M. Dorsch, playing in his first intercollegiate tournament, upset fifth seeded Stuart Waters of Iowa, 6-3, 6-3. Dorsch will face Wake Forest's Dj Spice. Baylor's Matias Marin lost his round of 16 match when Texas' Allistair Jenkin posted a 7-6, 6-2 victory.
In "B" singles results freshman Jason Gould advanced to the semifinals with a 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Colorado's Chad Tsuda. He will play David Knaszak of Texas Tech in the semifinals.
In "A" doubles all three Baylor teams won first round matches. Mike Garcia and Ivor Lovrak won their first round match but lost in the round of 16. Dorsch and Marin teamed to post two victories and move on to the quarterfinals as did the Baylor duo of Becker and Papp.
