Baylor Men's Tennis Defeats Texas 5-2

WACO, Texas - The 9th-ranked Baylor men's tennis posted an impressive victory over the University of Texas, 5-2, at the Baylor Tennis Center on Wednesday evening. Baylor remains undefeated in Big 12 play at 4-0 and is 19-1 overall, while No. 12 Texas falls to 17-2 on the season and 4-1 in league action.

Despite losing the doubles point, the Bears came storming back and won five of the six singles matches to capture the victory.

The Longhorns took the first match of the day when Jean Simon and Ryan Haymond defeated Reiner Neurohr and Matias Marin at No. 3 doubles 8-4. They captured the doubles point when 19-th ranked Jose Zarhi and Rodrigo Echagaray beat No. 10 Markus Hornung and Nathan McGregor 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. The losses were the first losses of the season at doubles for Hornung/McGregor and Neurohr/Marin, breaking a 10-match and 8-match win streak, respectively. Baylor's Benjamin Becker and Zoltan Papp, paired at No. 2 doubles, posted an 8-4 victory over No. 47 Will Clinton and Drew Hoskins.

The Bears started singles impressively, with each Baylor player winning their first set. Baylor's Zoltan Papp, Matias Marin and Markus Hornung would each post two-set victories over their Texas counterpart. Hornung bounced back from a 0-3 deficit in the first set and won six of the next seven games to take the first set. Baylor nailed down the match when Becker, ranked No. 6 nationally and playing No. 1 singles, defeated No. 13 Jean Simon, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. Minutes later, Reiner Neurohr, playing at No. 5 singles, would defeat Drew Hoskins 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 to give the Bears their fifth point. At No. 6 singles, Texas' Roger Gubser postedt a three-set win over Nathan McGregor. McGregor won the first set 6-4 but Gubser rebounded to take the next two 6-1, 6-4 for Texas' lone singles point.

The Bears' next action comes this weekend when they travel to Oklahoma for two Big 12 matches. They will face #44 Oklahoma State on Sat., April 13 at 2 p.m. in Stillwater and then play at Oklahoma on Sun., April 14 at 10 a.m.
