WACO, Texas - Baylor's Whitney Barrett was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America Women's Soccer third team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and released Monday.

Barrett, a senior from Albuquerque, N.M., became the program's second Academic All-American, joining Dawn Greathouse, who was so honored in 1999-2000. Barrett is the first Bear named to the Academic All-America team since Verizon/CoSIDA began selecting a soccer-specific team for the 2001-2002 school year. Greathouse was named to the Academic All-America At-Large third team as a junior.

Barrett was the only player from a Big 12 Conference school named to the 2002 Academic All-America Women's Soccer teams.

Earlier this month, Barrett received her second-straight Academic All-District selection. She was joined on the Academic All-District VI teams by juniors Melissa Humke and Emily Fukuchi, making Baylor the only school in District VI to have three players named to the All-District VI team and have two first-team selections.

To be considered for selection to an all-academic team, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible. Awards are voted on by members of CoSIDA.
