Baylor head football coach Kevin Steele spoke to the media at Tuesday's press luncheon. Below are excerpts from his comments.
Head Football Coach Kevin Steele:
On last week's loss to Texas:
"I thought our guys came out and played hard, and played emotional. We did some good things, but not enough to get it done... We had a 100-yard rusher versus one of the top defenses in the country... That football team we played is certainly one of the most talented and best-coached teams in the country."
"In this league, you've got to play really, really well when mismatched. We saw evidence this weekend across the league that anything can happen to anybody."
On this week's season finale against Oklahoma State:
"For this senior class, [Saturday's game] gives the opportunity to do some things... They've got the ability to go into Stillwater, and if we take care of business, can equal the [highest] number of wins since we've been in the Big 12. They can win more Big 12 games that we've won in the Big 12 and win the program's first Big 12 road game... It's an opportunity for this class to go out the way no senior class has."
"The flip side is that Oklahoma State is a very good football team... They've played well against some good teams and won... and they need one more win to be bowl-eligible, so there's motivation there, too."
On which Bears deserve postseason honor consideration:
"On offense, Reggie [Newhouse]... He's done it against everybody in the league for awhile. He's got to be one of the top three receivers in the league; he's got to be. He certainly deserves it."
"Rashad [Armstrong] could be considered for newcomer [of the year], particularly for what he's done in the Big 12 stretch."
"Cedric Fields is probably on the offensive line one of the most overlooked guys, because every week he plays well."
"On defense, Ethan [Kelley] and Kevin [Stevenson], because they've done it every week versus everybody... When I talk with other coaches... Ethan is one of those guys who always gets talked about."
On coaching his final game at Baylor this weekend:
"Anytime you get an opportunity to go play, you're always excited. I really haven't thought about it at all, personally. I'm going to coach again, if the good Lord is willing. We've got some players on the field who will be playing their last football game ever, at any level, so it's really about the players."
On what he'll miss most after leaving Baylor:
"The players. We've built bonds and relationships. These guys are part of my family, so I'll miss that. But I'll forever be their coach; nobody can take that away."
