BAYLOR (3-5, 1-3) at TEXAS TECH (5-4, 2-2)
Jones Stadium (51,000)
Lubbock, Texas
Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002 * 1:00 p.m. CST
Baylor travels to Lubbock for a 1 p.m. game Saturday against long-time foe Texas Tech at Jones SBC Stadium.
Despite holding an advantage in total yardage after three quarters, the Bears (3-5, 1-3) lost to their second-consecutive ranked opponent last weekend, dropping a 44-10 decision to then-No. 20 Kansas State. Meanwhile, Texas Tech (5-4, 2-2) was handed a 37-13 road loss at Colorado.
While Texas Tech leads the Big 12 in passing offense with 364.2 yards a game, Baylor is third at 238.0.
Both teams have struggled with turnovers. The Bears are last in the Big 12 with a minus-17 turnover margin; Tech is 11th in the league with a minus-11 margin.
SERIES
Baylor leads the all-time series, 32-27-2, since winning its first meeting against Texas Tech in 1929, 34-0, while the Red Raiders own a 19-14-1 advantage in Lubbock. The two have met every year since 1956. Texas Tech has won the last six meetings and nine of the last 11. The Red Raiders won last year in Waco, 63-19.
Nov. 2 is the latest Baylor and Texas Tech have met since the Red Raiders claimed a 31-24 win in Waco on Nov. 16, 1991.
COACHES
Kevin Steele (Tennessee, 1981) is 9-32 in his fourth season at Baylor. He is 0-3 against Texas Tech.
Texas Tech's Mike Leach (BYU, 1983) is 19-15 in his third season, all in Lubbock. He owns a 2-0 record against Baylor.
NEWHOUSE THIRD BEAR WITH 2,000 RECEIVING YARDS
Senior WR Reggie Newhouse, who has recorded 100 yards receiving in four of the Bears' eight games, caught nine passes for a career-high 173 yards against Kansas State to move into the top five all-time in both Big 12 Conference categories.
Newhouse also extended his consecutive games streak with at least one catch to 30.
Newhouse is currently second at Baylor in career receptions (157) and yardage (2,186) and tied for fourth in TD receptions (13). He needs seven receptions, 466 receiving yards and seven touchdowns to become Baylor's career leaders in those categories.
All-time among Big 12 players, the Dallas-native is fifth in receptions and fourth in receiving yardage. He is just the second player in Baylor history, and one of only eight in Big 12 history, to eclipse the 2,000-yard mark for a career.
On the season, he is currently fourth in the Big 12 in receptions per game (6.1, 16th nationally) and second in receiving yardage per game (96.8, 18th nationally).
Newhouse had eight catches for 164 yards at Cal, seven receptions for 119 yards against Samford and nine receptions for 120 yards versus Tulsa.
Against Kansas, Newhouse had six catches for 80 yards, but his clutch 12-yard, sideline reception with :04 remaining set up Daniel Andino's game-winning field goal.

BU KEEPING OPPONENTS UNDER 400 YARDS
Baylor's defense is currently seventh in the Big 12 and 52nd nationally, allowing 360.2 yards a game. But since Cal gained 460 yards in the season opener, the Bears have held seven-straight opponents under 400 yards. It's the longest such streak for Baylor since keeping 15-consecutive opponents below 400 total yards between 1994-96.
Also, for the first time since joining the Big 12, five-straight conference foes, including Oklahoma State at the end of last season, have been held below 400. The Bears' longest such streak vs. Big 12 foes prior to this was two games.
TURNOVERS FRUSTRATE BEARS
How does a team that stands 52nd nationally in total defense rank 106th in scoring defense? One word: turnovers.
Baylor ranks next-to-last in the nation with a minus-17 turnover margin (12 takeaways, 29 giveaways). Those mistakes have turned into opponent points, in some cases instantaneously. Opponents are averaging 14.1 points off turnovers, while the Bears are scoring just 1.9 points a game off takeaways.
Bear quarterbacks have thrown 14 interceptions in Baylor's last 18 quarters.
QUIROGA GIVES BEARS ANOTHER TARGET
WR Robert Quiroga has solidified his position as the team's secondary receiver target, after All-Big 12 senior Reggie Newhouse. Quiroga, a junior from San Antonio, has caught a career-best eight passes in each of the last two games against nationally-ranked foes Colorado and Kansas State.
Quiroga is currently second on the team with 28 receptions for 326 yards and a touchdown.
KELLEY LEADS BAYLOR DEFENSE
Senior DT Ethan Kelley, who began his Baylor career as a starter on the offensive line, currently leads the Bear defense with 51 total tackles, eight tackles for loss and 12 quarterback hurries.
Kelley's tackle totals have increased in recent games. Since averaging 4.8 tackles in the Bears' first five contests, Kelley has made 9.0 tackles a game in Baylor's last three outings. He had a season-high 11 stops against Texas A&M and followed with consecutive eight-tackle performances versus Colorado and Kansas State.
BEAR TIDBITS
- When facing third down and six-yards-or-less, Baylor is converting 48 percent of the time (22-of-46). When having to go seven-yards-or-more, the Bears have only been successful 23 percent of time (13-of-57). Overall, Baylor is converting 35 percent of the third down conversions (30-of-85).
- Senior WR Bobby Darnell's 25-yard touchdown reception to open the scoring against Kansas was the first of his career.
- Two Bears - Reggie Newhouse and Robert Quiroga - have caught at least one pass in each game this season.
- Eight different receivers have caught Baylor's eight touchdown passes this season.
- K Daniel Andino is now 2-of-2 in his career on game-winning field goal opportunities. Andino's 33-yard field goal with :01 left against Kansas gave Baylor a 35-32 win, just as his 29-yarder in 2001 gave the Bears a 16-13 overtime win over New Mexico. Earlier in the KU game he connected on a career-long 46-yarder.

Garrett was named honorable mention All-Big 12 last year after finishing third on the team in tackles with 89. He has started 20 of his first 25 games as a Bear.
