Three of Baylor's head coaches spoke to the media at Tuesday's press luncheon. Below are excerpts from their comments.
Head Volleyball Coach Brian Hosfeld:
On last week's results:
"Last week after we played Missouri, I said that was the best team we'd seen this season. Now after seeing Nebraska, they are definitely one of the top four teams in the country. Saturday's game was televised, in a sold-out environment. The team responded well, but did not put up the numbers we needed to win... The player who took off the most was Tisha Schwartz... We're going to take that into the match against Texas A&M, which is the end of the first round of Big 12 play."
On this week's schedule:
"It would be nice to start the second round by going down and winning for the first time in College Station... Daniella Lloreda is healthy now, jumping better, taking a lot more swings for us. We're not sure on Kelly Spriggs; she's been out the last couple of days with some sort of illness."
"Saturday should be a competitive match if we show up and play with any kind of consistency."
Head Soccer Coach Nick Cowell:
On the past weekend:
"This past weekend was disappointing. We tied Colorado Friday night, 1-1; that is really a team we should beat... Sunday, we actually played much better; we felt we gave a good account of ourselves, especially in the second half."
On this week's games:
"The bottom line is that we have to win our last two [Big 12] games. If we do that, we should make the Big 12 Tournament... That's a big 'if', but the bottom line is that if we want to compete at this level, we have to be able to do that on the road."
"The mentality of the players has to change a little bit... We need to raise it to another level. These last couple of games will be more like a single elimination tournament."
On goalkeeper Monica Housden:
"Monica was down in Mexico last week training for the Mexico National Team World Cup qualifiers. She won't know if she's made the team for a little while, so she's here this weekend. She's played well."
Head Football Coach Kevin Steele:
On this week's opponent, Kansas State:
"Depending on which poll you look at, we played the No. 20 or 21 team last week, and we get to play the No. 20 or 21 team this week. There's a difference in what they do, but they both go about it in a very physical, attacking way on both sides of the football."
"Kansas State runs a good bit of the option, but also goes out of the shotgun. But their whole game plan is to run the football... They are big and strong up front... and have a powerful running game."
"Defensively, they play a lot of man coverage, but they're not a blitzing football team... They get a great pass rush from the guys up front. They are a very good defensive football team."
On the team's quarterbacks:
"Aaron [Karas] is day-to-day with a bruised shoulder. He took a pretty good shot on it Saturday, and is questionable at best. We're going to compete this week, but Josh [Zachry] has come in and played very effectively, and came in last week and was very effective in there."
"Josh understands the offense. He's a competitor, and accurate in his throwing. Josh is fine. He'll do well when he's out there."
On the team's attitude:
"We're family. These guys are special guys; they work hard, and handle adversity like champions. We just reset our goals and go again."
