BAYLOR (3-4, 1-2) vs. No. 20 KANSAS STATE (5-2, 1-2)
Floyd Casey Stadium (50,000)
Waco, Texas
Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002 * 2:00 p.m. CDT
Baylor hosts Kansas State (21 Coaches, 20 AP) for homecoming at Floyd Casey Stadium, Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Bears (3-4, 1-2) were handed their second league loss of the year last weekend, dropping a 34-0 road decision at Colorado. Meanwhile, the Wildcats (5-2, 1-2) fell at home to Texas, 17-14.
SERIES
Kansas State leads the all-time series, 3-0, with two of those wins occurring in Waco. The Wildcats defeated Baylor 45-15 in a 1969 non-conference matchup and 49-6 in 1998 in a Big 12 contest. K-State also beat the Bears 48-7 in Manhattan in 1999.
COACHES
Kevin Steele (Tennessee, 1981) is 9-31 in his fourth season at Baylor. He is 0-1 against Kansas State.
Kansas State's Bill Snyder (William Jewell, 1962) is 110-51-1 in his fourteenth season, all in Manhattan. He owns a 2-0 record against Baylor.
HOMECOMING ON THE BRAZOS
This marks Baylor's 70th homecoming contest. The Bears are 33-32-4 in their 69 previous homecoming games and have lost their last four. Baylor's last homecoming victory came against Texas (23-21) in 1997.
Baylor has played 12 different opponents on homecoming. Kansas State is making its second appearance as the Bears' homecoming opponent. The Wildcats ruined Baylor's 1998 homecoming with a 49-6 win en route to the Big 12 North title.
TCU (31 times) and Texas A&M (20) have been the Bears' most frequent homecoming guests.
Events surrounding the homecoming football game include the annual pep rally and bonfire, Friday at 9:30 p.m., at Fountain Mall on campus. Saturday, the world's oldest and largest homecoming parade begins its procession in downtown Waco at 8 a.m., and winds its way to campus with floats, bands, and club representatives.
The Alumni Reunion Picnic and Class Meetings will be at Snickers Touchdown Alley, in the south end of Floyd Casey Stadium, with lunch served at 11:30 a.m.
BU KEEPING OPPONENTS UNDER 400 YARDS
Baylor's defense is currently seventh in the Big 12 and 52nd nationally, allowing 359.3 yards a game. But since Cal gained 460 yards in the season opener, the Bears have held six-straight opponents under 400 yards. It's the longest such streak for Baylor since keeping 15-consecutive opponents below 400 total yards between 1994-96.
Also, for the first time since joining the Big 12, four-straight conference foes, including Oklahoma State at the end of last season, have been held below 400.
BEARS SHOW TEETH AGAINST THE RUN
In Baylor's first five seasons in the Big 12 Conference, opponents rushed for at least 200 yards 28 times in 40 games. However, since the start of the 2001 season, Baylor has allowed 200 rushing yards to just two league opponents (Nebraska and Colorado) in a total of 11 Big 12 contests.
The Bears are currently fifth in the Big 12 and 45th nationally in run defense, allowing 136.3 yards a game.
TURNOVERS FRUSTRATE BEARS
How does a team that ranks 52nd nationally in total defense be 102nd in scoring defense? One word: turnovers.
Baylor ranks last in the nation with a minus-16 turnover margin (10 takeaways, 26 giveaways). Those mistakes have turned into opponent points, in some cases instantaneously. Opponents are averaging 14.1 points off turnovers, while the Bears are scoring just 1.9 points a game off takeaways.
Bear quarterbacks have thrown 12 interceptions in Baylor's last 14 quarters.
NEWHOUSE THIRD BEAR WITH 2,000 RECEIVING YARDS
Senior WR Reggie Newhouse, who has recorded 100 yards receiving in three of the Bears' seven games, became the third Bear in history to record 2,000 career receiving yards with his six-catch, 85-yard performance at Colorado. Newhouse also extended his consecutive games streak with at least one catch to 29.
Newhouse is currently second at Baylor in career receptions (148), third in yardage (2,013) and tied for fourth in TD receptions (13). He needs 16 receptions, 651 receiving yards and seven touchdowns to become Baylor's career leaders in those categories.
He is currently fifth in the Big 12 in receptions per game (5.7, 23rd nationally) and fourth in receiving yardage per game (85.9, 27th nationally).
Newhouse had eight catches for 164 yards at Cal, seven receptions for 119 yards against Samford and nine receptions for 120 yards versus Tulsa.
Against Kansas, Newhouse had six catches for 80 yards, but his clutch 12-yard, sideline reception with :04 remaining set up Daniel Andino's game-winning field goal.
STEELE FAMILY AFFAIR
Kansas State's visit to Waco will be a family reunion of sorts for the Steeles. Baylor head coach Kevin Steele and his brother, receivers coach Dale Steele, will be reunited with another brother, Jeff Steele, who serves as Kansas State's assistant athletic director for event management.
Dale also once worked at K-State, coaching there for two seasons (1987-88).
NUMBERS UP ACROSS THE BOARD FOR BEARS
Baylor's NCAA statistical rankings are up for nearly every major team offensive and defensive category. After finishing 103rd (310.5 ypg) last year in total offense, the Bears are currently 87th (352.0 ypg). Defensively, Baylor is 52nd nationally (359.3 ypg) after finishing 88th (418.2 ypg) last season. Below is the Bears' current NCAA ranking and corresponding 2001 finish:

ANDINO GETS SECOND GAME WINNER
K Daniel Andino is now 2-of-2 in his career on game-winning field goal opportunities. Andino's 33-yard field goal with :01 left against Kansas gave Baylor a 35-32 win, just as his 29-yarder in 2001 gave the Bears a 16-13 overtime win over New Mexico. Earlier in the KU game he connected on a career-long 46-yarder.
After hitting his first four field goal attempts of the year, Andino missed from 27 yards out against Texas A&M.
BEAR TIDBITS
? When facing third down and six-yards-or-less, Baylor is converting 48 percent of the time (22-of-46). When having to go seven-yards-or-more, the Bears have only been successful 23 percent of time (13-of-57). Overall, Baylor is converting 35 percent of the third down conversions (30-of-85).
? Senior WR Bobby Darnell's 25-yard touchdown reception to open the scoring against Kansas was the first of his career.
? Two Bears - Reggie Newhouse and Robert Quiroga - have caught at least one pass in each game this season.
? Quiroga set career highs in receptions (8) and receiving yardage (81) at Colorado.

BEARS FACE TOUGH SCHEDULE

Baylor's 2002 opponents went a combined 73-67 (.521) in 2001 and are 49-37 (.570) this season. Four of the Bears' 12 opponents are currently ranked in the AP Top 25.
BEAR CAPTAINS
Four seniors, DT Ethan Kelley, DE Charles Mann, WR Reggie Newhouse and DT Kevin Stevenson, were selected by their teammates as captains for the 2002 season.
GARRETT OUT FOR SEASON WITH KNEE INJURY
Junior LB John Garrett, one of 11 Big 12 players on the 67-man, preseason Butkus Award 'watch list,' is out for the season after injuring his knee (ACL) in Baylor's win over Kansas Oct. 5.
Garrett had accumulated 33 tackles and five tackles for loss before his season was cut short. One series before his injury, Garrett had set up a Bear field goal with his first career interception.
Garrett was named honorable mention All-Big 12 last year after finishing third on the team in tackles with 89. He has started 20 of his first 25 games as a Bear.
