AUBURN, Ala. - Baylor's cross country team had an impressive outing at the Auburn Invitational Saturday as the women's team won it's third meet in a row and the men finished second overall.
The Lady Bears captured first place scoring 83 points to knock off two teams, in Florida State and Wichita State, that had received votes in this weeks national polls. FSU finished second with 107 points and WSU rounded out the fields top-three scoring 115 points.
BU senior Kara Newton again paced the squad placing fifth out of 241 runners. Newton ran the 5,000-meter race in 16:59.42. Junior Stephanie Bennett and freshman Candice Kolb finished in the top-20 placing 14th (17:20.36) and 16th (17:24.25), respectively.
Baylor's men's team came away with a second place finish behind 21st-ranked Alabama. The Bears scored 111 points to Bama's 74. Sophomore Matt Chance was the top Bear finisher for the second time this season placing fifth out of the field of 253. Chance turned in a time of 24:41.10 for the 8,000-meter race. Sophomore Nick Devenport was the only other BU finisher in the top-20 as he placed 17th with a time of 25:12.20.
Baylor cross country will return to action Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Southwest Texas Classic in San Marcos, Texas.
