Waco, Texas - After only one week of practice, Baylor's Kevin Steele knew to expect the Bear defense to have the upper hand on the offense during Saturday's first scrimmage of the fall workouts.
"Most coaches at this time of the year talk about their defense being ahead of their offense," Steele said, "and it happened here today."
The defense limited the offense to just a pair of non-situational scores during the 90-minute scrimmage: a 37-yard field goal by backup kicker Grant Callison and a 27-yard touchdown pass from Greg Cicero to Reggie Newhouse. The offense scored several times near the end of the scrimmage in goal line situations.
"We've put a lot of offense in and a lot of defense in, so their heads are swimming a little right now," Steele said. "Plus, there a little dead-legged because it's our sixth-straight day of two-a-days. What you want to see in the first scrimmage is who will fight and get after it.
"The defense flew around and we saw John Garrett and Bobby Hart and Marcus Stenix and Greg Wade and some guys make a lot of plays. I thought the pass rush generated off the edge with A.C. Collier, Aaron Lard and Charles Mann was good. It took a while to get in sync on offense. We made some plays offensively, but we left a lot of them on the table, too. Most of the problems involve timing and consistency, which we have three weeks to improve."
Two-a-day practices conclude Sunday, while classes on the Baylor campus begin Monday. The Bears open the 2001 season Sept. 8 at home against Arkansas State.
