WACO, Texas - Baylor men's tennis team advanced one player and one doubles team to the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships which are being held at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas. The tournament begins tomorrow, Nov. 8, and will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 11.
Freshman Benni Becker, ranked No. 98 nationally with a 10-3 record, was an at-large selection by the ITA National Tournament Committee and will compete in a field of 32 others. He will face his first opponent, Stanford's Scott Lipsky, ranked No. 57 nationally, on Thursday.
The undefeated (9-0) doubles team Markus Hornung and Reiner Neurohr were automatic qualifiers by winning the ITA Region VI Championships and are one of 16 doubles teams competing. In their first match, the two will battle with Middle Tennessee State's Oliver Foremanand and Robert Gustafsson, ranked No. 7 nationally.
More than 10,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the Omni Hotels Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships. The tournament will see many new faces present in this year's tournament as only four of the 32 players were also in last February's draw.
Singles play begins daily at 8:30 a.m. with doubles to follow completion of singles.
