WACO, Texas - Eight Baylor football players received all-Big 12 Conference honors the league office announced today.
OL Greg Jerman and P Adam Stiles earned second-team all-Big 12 accolades, while WR Reggie Newhouse and LB A.C. Collier each earned third-team honors. Four Bear players, in OL Joe Jackson, DL Ryan Gillenwater, LB John Garrett, and DB Bobby Hart were also selected to the conference's honorable mention team.
Jerman, a senior from El Paso, Texas, started in 38 games during his career at Baylor, including all 11 contests during his senior season.
Stiles, who served as the Bears' primary punter in 2001, kicked 70 punts for a 44.1-yard average to record the fourth-best single-season punting average in school history. The senior from Wichita, Kan. also kicked two career-long 59-yard punts during the year, and placed 14 of his kicks inside the 20-yard line.
Newhouse, Baylor's leading receiver this season, pulled in a team-high 61 catches for 706 yards and eight touchdowns. A junior from Dallas, Texas, Newhouse's 61 catches ranks third on BU's all-time season pass receptions list, while his eight touchdown receptions tie him with two other players for the second-most touchdowns in a single-season in school history.
Collier, another junior out of Dallas, Texas, lead the team with six sacks for a loss of 52 yards and ranked second on the team with 11 tackles for loss. Collier was also credited with 46 tackles, including 23 solo stops.
Jackson, a senior from Groveton, Texas, served as BU's center for the last two and a half years. He started 36 straight games for the Bears and 40 total during his career.
Senior Ryan Gillenwater from The Woodlands, Texas had 35 tackles on the season despite not playing in the final game of the year becase of a dislocated shoulder. Gillenwater was also credited with four tackles for loss, one funmble recovery and two quarterback hurries in 2001.
Garrett was the Bears' third leading tackler recording 89 stops (46 solo, 43 assisted) on the season. The sophomore from Mart, Texas also racked up 10 tackles for loss, three deflected passes, eight quarterback hurries, and one sack.
Before missing the final three games of the season with a bruised liver Hart ranked third on the Bear squad with 65 tackles, including 43 solo stops. The sophomore from Waco, Texas lead the team with 15 passes broken up. He also recorded one interception and one tackle for loss during the season.
Baylor wrapped up its season Saturday with a convincing 56-12 win over Southern Illinois. The Bears finished the year 3-8 overall.
