Waco, Texas - Despite being split between two locations, the Baylor men's tennis team enjoyed success on Friday, Oct. 5. In the prequalifying tournament of the ITA All-American Championships, Zoltan Papp, Matias Marin and Markus Hornung each won two matches and in the UT-San Antonio Fall Invitational, Nathan McGregor, Mike Garcia and Armando Carrascosa all advanced to the semifinals.
At the ITA All-American, held at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain Georgia, Papp defeated Auburn's Andre Boz (6-4, 6-2) and David Misner of Samford (2-6, 6-0, 6-0). Marin stopped Nebraska's Lance Mills (2-6, 6-1, 6-3) and Francisco Diaz of East Tennessee State (6-2, 6-0). Hornung defeated another Big 12 foe in Colorado's top player Maciej Dilaj (6-2, 6-3) then turned around and beat Florida State's Rodrigo Laub (6-4, 6-1). Cory Ross lost his first match to Alexander Kasarov of Wisconsin (6-4, 6-3).
Papp, Marin and Hornung will participate in singles on Saturday while Ross and Marin have two doubles matches scheduled.
In San Antonio, McGregor, Garcia and Carrascosa all posted two singles wins to move into the semifinals. McGregor posted victories over Shazeeb Niazi of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi , 6-2, 6-7 (10-6) and UT-Pan American's Matt Gower (6-3, 6-2). Garcia defeated Hunter Emmott of Texas A&M, 6-4, 3-6 (10-6) and Kareen Abdullah of UT-Pan Am (6-2, 6-4). Carrascosa swept Tom Mangleshotz (UT-Pan AM) by scores of 6-2, 6-0 then defeated Texas A&M's Alex Baeragum, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6. In doubles action Garcia and McGregor teamed to defeat UTSA's Stephan Pope and Dounaev 8-4. They will play the team of Hunter Emmott and Alex Baeragum of Texas A&M in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Carrascosa teamed with Tyler JC's Rafael Pinto in doubles but the duo lost to Abdullah and Gower from UTSA 8-5.
