NORMAN, Okla. - The Baylor volleyball team (18-5, 6-4 Big 12) came back from a two games to one and 11-9 deficit in game four to defeat host Oklahoma, 3-2 (15-4, 4-15, 12-15, 15-12, 15-8), Friday night.
Baylor took off in the first game as Dana Atkinson's first five serves resulted in points, including two aces. After going up 8-1, Oklahoma (6-13, 1-8 Big 12) scored two points, including an ace of their own. That was as close as OU would get as Baylor pulled away for the 15-4 win.
Atkinson finished the game with six service points and Tatiana Kenon added five, with one ace. BU's serving kept the Sooners guessing in the back row as the team had trouble handling the serve all game. Baylor hit .412 as a team compared to Oklahoma's .000 percentage.
Oklahoma came out firing in the second game, going up 5-0 and forcing the Bears to call timeout. OU continued to roll as they built a lead of 9-1 with the help of frontline kills by Cathy Cook and Chantae Weathers. The two combined for nine kills in the game.
The Sooners did not let up as they took game two, 15-4. Oklahoma hit .538 in the game (15 kills, 1 error, 26 attempts) compared to Baylor's .156. This time OU hit three service aces and the Bears only got one.
The third game saw both teams trade multiple kills and the score see-sawed until Oklahoma turned a 7-7 tie into an 11-7 lead. The Bears then staged a comeback to pull within 12-11, but the team could not get any closer as the Sooners won, 15-12.
OU continued to stay hot by opening the fourth game with a 6-1 lead. The Bears regrouped and pulled within 7-5 and eventually tied the score at 9-9. Down 11-9, Baylor mounted another comeback and took a 14-11 lead with the help of kills by Young and Sooner miscues. BU would hold on for the 15-12 win.
Baylor went ahead 4-1 and 7-3 in rally scoring before putting away the Sooners 15-8.
Young led the way with 25 kills and a .460 hitting percentage, and Elisha Polk added 20. Dana Atkinson was solid in the back row digging 14 balls and Polk tallied 13 digs.
Weathers and Cook each had 19 kills for the Sooners, while Allison Silveira had a team-high nine digs.
With her second kill in the third game, senior outside hitter Elisha Polk reached 2,000 in her career. The all-time Baylor kill leader now has 2,017 and sits less than 100 kills away from 15th place in NCAA history.
Sophomore setter Dana Chuha did not play against the Sooners. Chuha sat out to rest in preparation for the upcoming match against Colorado this Wednesday.
