Volleyball Places Six On Academic All-Big 12 Team

WACO, Texas - Baylor's women's volleyball team placed six players on the Academic all-Big 12 Team, announced Monday by the conference office. Dana Atkinson, Sunny Nicholas and Margo Singley all earned first-team honors, while Kirsten Berg, Dana Chuha and Kimmy Scott were selected to the second team.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the volleyball academic all-league squad consisted of 45 combined first team members with 14 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.2 or better grade-point average, while the second team are those who have a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
A senior from Huntington Beach, Calif., Atkinson is tops on the team and fifth in the Big 12 with 3.37 digs per contest, she is a marketing student at Baylor. Nicholas, a junior education major from Fullerton, Calif., is second on the team with a .272 attacking percentage and 0.75 blocks per game. Singley is a senior from Pasadena, Calif., and is averaging 1.48 digs per game.
Chuha, a junior pre-dentistry major from Yorba Linda, Calif., currently leads the nation in assists for the second consecutive season, averaging 14.99 per game. A junior English and professional writing student, Scott is from Laguna Beach, Calif., and is averaging 2.08 digs per game. Berg is a junior interdisciplinary studies major from La Habra Heights, Calif., she is averaging 2.65 kills and 2.52 digs per game.
Nebraska and Texas A&M led all teams with seven representatives on the two teams, followed by Baylor with six. All 11 schools that sponsor women's volleyball - Oklahoma State does not - had at least three players named to the academic teams.
Since the beginning of the Big 12 Conference prior to the 1996 season, 13 Baylor players have been named academic all-conference a total of 27 times. Only Nebraska has been honored more times.
